Nowadays, Botanical Art may sound like a niche age old tradition, but in fact, there are over 5000 Botanical artworks held at The National Herbarium of Victoria and it is set to make a comeback. From 25 October to 9 November, Domain House Gallery, opposite the Herbarium in Melbourne's Royal Botanical Garden precinct, will host The Art of Botanical Illustration Exhibition. Brought to you by
The Friends of the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne , this is the twelfth exhibition of its kind. There will be over 150 selected works depicting native and ornamental plants in mainly watercolour, pencil and ink on display and for sale. The creation of Botanical Illustration requires more than artistic talent, it also requires an understanding of the science of the plant; morphology and access to specimens and references. Work for the exhibition is selected by a botanist and must be scientifically accurate representations of the flora. The Botanical illustrations selected are so precise that it's such a rare talent in an artist, and well worth viewing up close. A medal named in honour of the renowned Botanical Artist, Celia Rosser, recognising her contribution to the genre of botanical illustration, will go to the artist whose illustration is judged to be the best.[BREAK]
