The Art Gallery of New South Wales is stunning. Quite simply, this is an amazing place. Any notions you might have that Australia isn't cultured will be dispelled with a visit to the Art Gallery of New South Wales.
There is a range of impressive travelling exhibitions that call the gallery a temporary home, but other impressive international visitors have included Picasso and Warhol - in little old Sydney, can you imagine!
The permanent exhibitions are no less impressive, and feature a huge range of Australian and international artists. The art featured in the various permanent exhibitions also comes from a range of eras and styles, giving the gallery a feeling of authenticity and offering art catering to all styles and tastes.
Cost of entry varies according to what you want to see, your age and your booking method. I've found that no matter how "expensive" (as a student, the most I've ever paid was $12) the exhibition, it's always worth the price of entry. In addition to the artworks you might see, the building itself is very impressive - huge ceilings and natural light give it a welcoming feeling, with a neutral style of architecture suiting all styles of artwork.
Once you enter, you can wander freely and easily fill an afternoon or whole day. If you need a coffee break, there's an on-site café with decent coffee and food, although it does come at a premium price.
