Homeless and disadvantaged artists are championed by exhibit
As part of The Brisbane Festival,Art from the Margins (AFTM) is holding their annual exhibition in Brisbane City Hall. For the first time, it will showcase all works for the exhibition in the one location which will allow visitors to surround themselves with original, inspiring and challenging pieces by artists living with a disadvantage or in social isolation.
The artists come from many and varied backgrounds with some living with physical or intellectual disabilities. Mental health issues and homelessness also play a huge role in the lives of the artists who are showcased in this exhibition and their stories are similar to the reasons why AFTM was started by Wesley Missions. It began as a program to support homeless artists to overcome the challenges of being without a home but producing or wanting to be given the opportunity to produce artworks. AFTM now supports all disadvantaged artists as a not-for profit association by providing exhibition and professional development opportunities.
In their online store, you can purchase calenders, greeting cards and mobile phone cases featuring artist's works of which the profits go directly back to the artist.
