Around sixty people attended the official opening of the Towards Abstraction art exhibition at the Culliford Gallery on 9 October 2022. The artists displayed were Vivienne Boland, Maureen Berry, Gillian Frederick, Marina McDougall and Deidre Rutherford. Abstract art expresses the feelings of the artist, an art form that began after World War II, when artists found it difficult to express their traumatic experiences. The Toowoomba Art Society has brought together a collection of beautiful and fascinating abstract works.

Vivienne Boland's skill in the use of colour is impressive. She has long admired the French impressionists but transitioned from impressionist to abstract, finding it more freeing with more unplanned works. Boland's thoughts, feelings and impressions paint the picture. Her journal of personal discovery in this exhibit is revealed in 'Upon Reflection', a mixed media which piques the curiosity, inviting personal interpretation. This work can be purchased for $395. A nearly monochrome acrylic 'The Critics' was not for sale.

Maureen Berry's acrylics are vibrant and alive. Her paintings can be purchased for an average of $200. Maureen has an adventurous spirit with bold lines, blurred lines and colour choices. Capturing the feeling of locations in brilliantly combined shapes and colours, Maureen's work is both fun and intriguing.

Gillian Frederick's works in the small gallery are entitled Energy Transfer. Gillian's work evolved from a rigid agenda of expectations towards intuition and playfulness and now her art has blossomed.

Marina McDougall has been experimenting with abstract impressionism and this exhibit is her first time using acrylics on canvas instead of oils. She has limited her colour choices and focussed more on organic shapes and lines. The liberation of her subconscious mind is the result. Some of Marina's work is for sale for $95, with a larger painting for $180.

Deidre Rutherford's paintings can have high contrast in colour with textures, with her main interest landscapes. In this exhibit, the natural world came into play with colours from the Australian landscape and seascape. Her joy in art leads her to experiment with a great variety of mixed media and she likes the sense of the mysterious. Her painting 'Mending Heart' gave me that feeling and for $600 you can make it yours.
