Christies Beach neighbours Margaret Mccaul and Julia Wakefield have teamed up to add a new dimension to the Beach Road Pop-up shop.

Shop 1A at 39 Beach Road is a new initiative by Onkaparinga Council, designed to engage with residents and local businesses. The idea is that it should be used as a creative space to build a bank of ideas and opportunities that will activate and enhance the area.

One wall in the shop is devoted to ideas, where residents, visitors and business owners have all written their suggestions for ways to revitalise the Beach Road area.

In response to the Council's invitation to local businesses to use the space in creative ways, Margaret and Julia will open the shop from 4 - 16 January to display their skilful and quirky artwork, and will also run demonstrations and workshops throughout the two week period. Items for sale include art dolls, cards, decorated mugs, printed T shirts, handmade prints and Julia's illustrated poetry book, 'A Disastrous Honeymoon', a sequel to Edward Lear's 'The Owl and the Pussycat'.

Margaret has recently turned her artistic talents to Doll Making after a thirty year career in Pottery, with work purchased throughout Australia and overseas.

Experimenting first with small dolls to familiarize herself with the human form, dimension of limbs and movement, she has now progressed to a variety of dolls in many styles. A love of fabric, textiles and 'dressing up' dates back to her teens and she has now resurrected her old sewing machine, bought with her first pay the year she left school. Her dolls can be found at Magetta Jem .

Margaret has a commitment to recycling, and many dolls including her large figurines are made from 'up-cycled' materials. 'But, as well,' she says, 'I'm a 'real girl', in that I love crispy new cottons, tulle, lace, organza, pearls and lots of bling, and enjoy the satisfaction of a very frilly skirt.'

On Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 2pm, Margaret will demonstrate the skills required to create a cloth doll, as well as the artistic flair that she uses to paint her dolls' faces. On Saturday 9 January at 10am she will give a free workshop for those who are interested in making a mini doll*.

Julia Wakefield studied Illustration and Printmaking in the UK and spent many years illustrating children's books both in the UK and Australia. These days she works from 'Black Dog Studio', her home studio in Christies Beach, producing handmade prints, cards and T-shirt designs, which are available from Redbubble under Mi Mi Designs.

She came to Adelaide in 2001 after a prolonged stay in the UK and brought with her a pair of romantic rabbits that had insisted on taking up residence inside her head. They have adapted perfectly to the Australian environment and feature in many of her relief prints and designs.

On Monday and Friday afternoons from 2pm Julia will demonstrate the tools and skills needed to produce woodcuts, plus the creative possibilities of rag books – a perfect gift for a new baby. On Saturday 16 January she will conduct a free workshop in drawing and colouring Tshirt designs – with a range of Tshirts and other garments for participants to choose from*.

Julia runs regular Life Drawing sessions at Port Noarlunga Arts Centre on alternate Tuesday evenings. She also teaches a course for beginners called ' Drawing for the Terrified ' at various community centres in Adelaide, and she plans to run a new beginners' course along these lines on the other Tuesday evenings at the Arts Centre, starting in February.

Please note: All workshops need to be booked at the Popup shop. They are suitable for adults and children over 12. Although the workshop tuition is free, there is a small materials cost: $5 for the mini dolls, and $10 includes the cost of the Tshirt.
