The art community in Goolwa is thriving, with a diverse range of galleries showcasing impressive works. Among these galleries is , which stands out from the rest because it is managed by a small group of artists who carefully curate the collection, selecting only the finest pieces created by their exceptionally talented peers.
The gallery is housed in an historic building in Porter Street. The structure itself exudes character, and the interior is brimming with exquisite artwork.
The assortment is varied and includes photographs, paintings, and drawings in various mediums, as well as ceramics, glassware, and fabric pieces crafted from materials such as silk, felt, and even upholstery.
In its present form, the gallery originated in 2012, when a committee of artists with similar visions came together and incorporated the organisation. Some of the original group, including Cathy Portas, still exhibit and contribute to the general running of the gallery.
Cathy's artistic abilities are remarkable, and she showcases her talents through various mediums, including painting and ceramics. Her 'Bendy Jugs' are particularly popular with visitors to the gallery.
Cathy lives locally but other artists, including Annette Dawson, live further afield and are happy to travel to exhibit here and contribute to the running of the gallery. Annette's paintings of native birds are incredibly realistic to the point I felt I wanted to reach out and touch feathers.
Ruby Donovan hails from the Adelaide Hills but spends stretches of time near the coast, judging by her gorgeous shell collages.
There is an abundance of treasures available to entice potential buyers.
For those who may not have the means to purchase a substantial piece of art, unique handmade cards, designed by the artists, are available for sale.
The gallery is to be a featured space during the
South Australian Wooden Boat Festival to be held 28-30 April 2023. It will be part of an
Art Trail designed to encourage visitors to the River Port to explore the town as well as the Marina where the wooden boats can be found.
An exhibition to be entitled 'Riverlife' will revolve around the theme of the Wooden Boat Festival, highlighting water, boats, sea, and river life, which is particularly fitting given Goolwa's location between the River Murray and the Southern Ocean.
is open from 11am until 4pm every day welcomes visitors wishing to browse or buy.
