'Art After Dark' celebrations are being held as part of the Winter Masterpiece Series, each Wednesday at the National Gallery of Victoria - St Kilda Road.& #8232 ;& #8232 ;

From Wednesday, June 6th to Wednesday October 3rd, 2012, a fine soiree with music, food and wine appears in the forecourt, which is transformed with tables, a portable bar, staging, cables and microphones.& #8232 ;

Having the privilege to attend recently, I can tell you that under red light illumination, the forecourt is given an entirely different atmosphere. The hanging tapestries is the Great Hall stand out in particularly and beneath an interesting shadow play, a crowd of sophisticates gather before visiting the Napoleon - Revolution to Empire exhibition .& #8232 ;

The line to the bar fills fast and stylish waiters in crisp black and white whizz back and forth delivering dishes to seated guests. From the suitable French themed menu, I chose 'Shucked oysters with lemon and a raspberry & shallot vinaigrette' ($3.00 each), 'Pommes Frites with sea salt and mayonnaise ($10.00) and 'Toasted brioche with smoked salmon, goat's curd and watercress' ($16.00) for my meal.& #8232 ;& #8232 ;


Each delightful plate was fresh and well-presented. It was amusing to receive the food complete with serviettes printed with Napoleonic emblems. To finish of the feast, I indulged in a glass of '2009 Mon Redon Cotes du Rhone' ($10.00) and thoroughly enjoyed its European flavour.

Between 6:00pm and 6:45pm, then again at 8:00pm until 8:45pm, a live Melbourne band, ' The Orbweavers ' played. They had a double bass, acoustic guitar, violin and vocalist and & #8232 ;their smooth jazz, with a sometimes Spanish influence, provided a cool and relaxed vibe.


& #8232 ;Tickets to the Napoleon - Revolution to Empire exhibition can be purchased for viewings at 6:00pm, 7:00pm or 8:00pm on Wednesday evenings so the forecourt event empties in these increments. ' Art After Dark ' is so chic however, I wouldn' t be surprised that even people not visiting the exhibition swing by.
