Spending time at a luxury day spa is very affordable in Bali, so I'm on a virtuous quest to find the very best spa on the island. You'll thank me for it.

I stumbled upon the Aroma Spa Retreat when I was walking along the Sanur Beachwalk. It's part of the Prama Sanur Beach Hotel and it comprises several pavilions with thatched roofs, right on the beach front.

Without hesitation I headed straight for the 'Reception Desk' pavilion to study the menu and book a heavenly session. I decided on a two hour, 45 minute Exfoliation and Rehydration package priced at $120 Aus. Expensive by Indonesian standards, I know, but I sensed it would be worth it.

So the following afternoon at 12.45pm I was collected from my villa and escorted to Aroma Spa for my 1pm appointment. As soon as I hopped into the Aroma Spa car, Dewa, my driver, welcomed me with a cool, perfumed towel and a bottle of mineral water. I felt my package had already begun. And of course transport was included in the package price.

On arrival I was welcomed and introduced to Kadek, my personal spa therapist. Kadek escorted to my own changeroom and bathroom.

I changed into my Aroma kimono and placed all my worldly goods into a storage box which Kadek carried for me to each treatment area. A little bit of added security assurance so that I needn't worry about my belongings.

And so the pampering began. I enjoyed a 'deluxe foot ritual with Shiatsu massage' while sipping ginger tea. From my comfy chair I could see colourful boats on the sand and the sparkly sea beyond.

Around me gauze curtains the colour of sea foam, billowed in the gentle breeze.

Half an hour later Kadek took me back to 'my room' where my exfoliation was to take place. She showed me a mixture of grated coconut, ground rice and virgin coconut oil before buffing and polishing my skin with it.

Next I was to bathe in milk, honey and flowers.

After channeling my inner Cleopatra, I fluffy-towel dried myself and put on my kimono ready for the next treat.

My 1.5 hour massage with warm virgin coconut oil and essential oil inhalations was designed, according to Kadek, to open energy paths and release blockages. It was blissful.

I was vaguely aware of a soothing mix of Indonesian and western music. I fear I heard the waltz from The Sound of Music but it soon morphed into The Flower Duet from Lakmé. Much more relaxing.

All good things must end as did my spa session. I felt like a whole new person though, and it was worth every rupiah. I sat dreamily in the back seat of Dewa's van as he drove me back to my villa.

Aroma offers all manner of treatments lasting from 1.5 hours to eight hours. Their website lists all of them and is easy to navigate. You can even book on line. As a matter of fact I've just booked the Airport Chill Package for $159 Aus.
