Just like a cake shop should be
There are a lot of cakes at Arnold's. Lined up in shiny glass cabinets. Delicious sweet works of art.
There are cakes for a special celebration; chocolate torte, flourless orange, black forest cake. If you prefer, there are cakes for just celebrating the moment, like a small hazelnut butter cream cake. Perfect on a cold, windy afternoon with a hot chocolate.
So many cakes to choose from
Arnold's is a Heidelberg institution. Established in 1952 by Swiss couple, Arnold and Olga, Arnold's is one of those cake shops where traditional recipes have stood the test of time. I remember having the black forest cake from Arnold's when I was a child and looking at it sitting proudly in the display cabinet today took me back to happy days in the 80's.
You can't walk past Arnold's Swiss Cakes without being tempted by a warm pastry or a black forest cake
A friendly staff member explained to me that as Arnold and Olga did not have children of their own, the business was passed down to their apprentice and later passed onto other loyal staff. Today, Garry owns Arnold's, where a wide assortment of sweet and savoury delights can be found.
I enjoyed the vegetarian pastie which was filled with a generous mix of carrot and potato wrapped in firm and delicious pastry. My hot chocolate was served with a generous amount of chocolate and was the perfect temperature. But beware, you may just walk around unknowingly with chocolate on the side of your mouth like I did afterwards!

The décor is comfortably unassuming. The smell of warm baked goods hits you even before you open the door, and once inside, I assure you, you'll leave with more than you intended.
Arnold and Olga's portrait hangs high, overlooking the shop which they established. Sadly, they have both passed away, but they have left a sweet legacy for all to enjoy. Thank you Arnold's for a little bit of Switzerland in Melbourne.
