Bali style huts provide private dining
Nestled around 8000sqm of land the recently renovated Arkarra Tea Gardens at Dundowran, near Hervey Bay is the place to go for a meal out with friends or family. Whether your choice is a full sized breakfast on weekends, a scrumptious morning or afternoon tea or lunch, which could include anything from spicy lamb burger patties to salt and pepper calamari, all tastes including gluten-free are catered at Arkarra. A full-time chef prepares meals on the premises and all the cakes, scones, slices, biscuits and muffins are totally homemade.

New owners Jody and Julie Reid bought the property after it was left unused for many years. After an arduous amount of work to clean up and landscape the gardens, Arkarra Tea Gardens re-opened in October 2013 complete with a café and gift store. They support the local community by purchasing products from local suppliers and use locally roasted coffee. A small gift shop is situated in the café building with items at very reasonable prices.
Large wooden tables and chairs covered by individual Bali huts offer patrons a private dining experience in all types of weather. The huts are situated so that conversations from each hut are not overheard.
Arkarra's landscaped garden adjoins council-owned lagoons and walking tracks and it was lovely to take a walk after the meal to see the numerous species of birds flocking to the area. Ducks and pelicans could be seen around the council lagoon.
The complex offers a very relaxed and tranquil feeling and with the amount of people coming and going on the Sunday morning I was there, I would say the word is already out that Arkarra Tea Gardens is the place to be. Off-street parking is provided in two areas.
Prices range from $10 for eggs on toast or a full breakfast at $18.50. A Scone and Jam will cost you $4.00 or with a mug sized beverage $8.00. Slices and biscuits start at $3.75. Other meals are individually priced from their menu.
Arkarra Tea Gardens are open from Wednesday to Sunday. Talk to Jody or Julie for your next special occasion. My friend and I just visited on the Sunday without a booking; however bookings can be made in advance for larger groups.
