Here is a film that is bound to polarise feelings and opinions.
Even though Are We Officially Dating has a fine cast, it is a shame they have to contend with such a lame script with a very predictable story-line, which manages to be funny only occasionally. Much of the attempted humour comprises of smutty lines, which may be a generation thing, however there was very little laughter from the audience; obviously nothing new or amusing in a movie about young guys exercising their sexual freedom and wanting to get laid without any obligations.
Tom Gormican is the first-time writer and director of Are We Officially Dating whose previous film Movie 43 suffered much the same outcome with stretching his jokes out far too long. Gormican's attempts at pushing the boundaries with 'men's talk' fails to be witty. The film suffers from too much boring toilet humour and the lack of creative direction has moments when his attempts at being serious also fall flat.
This film, inspired by Shakespeare's [I]Love's Labour's Lost/I], is about three guys played by Zac Efron, Miles Teller and Michael B. Jordan, who vow to remain single as they go raking in the ladies and dating until that awkward moment when the girl asks that question "So?"; wishing clarification on just where the relationship is heading. If you are expecting a romantic comedy then unfortunately you are likely to be disappointed as this film lacks warmth and fails to be clever or entertaining
