Arbory Afloat Yarra River dining bar on the river
Watching the boats go by

A glass of wine and something to eat down by the Yarra River is always a good idea, especially on a warm summer's day. There is something about eating and drinking on the edge of the water, be it the sea, lake or a river. The stress of the day floats away with the boats passing by and all is right with the world.

Arbory Afloat, the new pontoon-based restaurant, just down from its big sister Arbory, is a place to enjoy the river to its fullest. The water in the river may not be that transparent, but it makes up for it by the rowing boats and their very fit rowers, sightseeing boats with tourists waving, and being right in the middle of a busy city.

Arbory Afloat is open for breakfast from 7.30 and then follows with an all-day menu from 11 am until late. Breakfast on the Yarra early in the morning sounds particularly appealing with a cheese waffle, mushrooms, porcini mascarpone, truffle oil, herbs & a fried egg. You can also have a healthy option with almond milk bircher muesli. The all-day menu leans towards light shared food such as antipasto and seafood platters, oysters, prosciutto wrapped melon and thin crust pizzas among others. You could also just have a glass of wine or prosecco and have some porcini croquettes if not feeling too hungry.

Pidapipo gelato served in cups or in a brioche bun is the perfect dessert to finish off the meal. There is a large selection of summer cocktails on offer, Pimm's Cups, Aperol Spritz, frozen Pina Coladas and pomegranate Mojitos, to name just a few. A wide-ranging wine list with a focus on wines from France and Italy as well as Australia. For gin lovers, there is a dedicated gin menu.

The ambiance is very much relaxed and somewhat reminiscent of European beach clubs, accentuated by the blue and white decor. The day beds look particularly appealing. The resident DJ provides the requisites sounds to enjoy a calm afternoon followed by a more frantic pace when people arrive after work.

Arbory Afloat is a temporary fixture on the water until February 2018 so why not come down and enjoy a drink or meal right at water's edge. You can also buy a NYE all-inclusive food and beverage package to see in 2018 from a perfect vantage point.
