For the first time ever, the Arab Film Festival Australia (AFFA) comes to Perth, from 11-12 August, at Curtin University. The festival will screen two feature films and a short, and to celebrate the move west, entry to the screenings are by donation only.

The newest location for the Arab Film Festival, Perth will open with a special screening of Barakah Meets Barakah. Directed by Mahmoud Sabbagh, the story details the unlikely coupling of an erratic, ultra-famous Instagram video blogger and improbable municipal agent, and the challenges of dating in Saudi Arabia. The film also took home the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury at the Berlin International Film Festival 2016.

Another film screening in Perth is Assad Fouladkar's Halal Love, a warming and witty film capturing the humour in faith and relationships. The story cleverly intertwines three different love stories, as devout Lebanese Muslims try to pursue love and happiness without breaking religious rule. Running in Official Competition at Sundance 2016, Halal Love also opened the Arab Film Festival Australia to full houses in Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra.
