One of the outstanding events in the Brisbane Calendar is the staging of the Asian Pacific Triennial exhibitions. The first one I attended was soon after I moved to Brisbane and this is the new and current exhibition which was launched sometime in November of 2015. APT8 includes more than 80 artists and groups, an ongoing program of artist performances and projects; extensive cinema programs; publications; and activities for kids and families.


This particular work was created by the artist on the wall of the gallery using charcoal and clay materials also associated with mining. He comes from Central India and effectively escaped a life in the mines. Three generations of his family have spent their lives working in the mines. He draws his inspiration from its history but also its impact on the natural world.He calls it the "extension" symbolising the widespread pursuit of mining in the world.You can enjoy his work as well as the work of talented artists as the exhibition will be on until April of this year.

There are enormous installations as well as the minutely crafted art, interesting video presentations and interactive processes that the Queensland Gallery of Modern Art lays on after months of research, preparation and attention to detail. If you live in this city you should make time to visit this exhibition, irrespective of what kind of art you like as you might be pleasantly surprised by what you see which broadens horizons and tells stories that you could hardly think of or expect. I would urge you to go along and join one of the volunteer guides who can give you more insight into the artists and their work and they are on 11.00AM SAT 2 JAN 2016 – THU 24 MAR 2016


This particular giant structure which must have taken hours to bring into the gallery and install was created by the artist Asim Waif using old demolished Queensland structures. Contrast that to the miniatures created with fine precision by the Pakistani artist Risham Syed and you have an interesting juxtaposition of pieces equally strong and meaningful.

One of my favourites is upstairs in the gallery where as a result of a collaboration of 15 dancers a spectacle is put up through videos sharing the dances of each one but also re creating within the gallery the natural environment within which some of these dances would take place. All I will say is that it comes alive and is well worth seeing.



Talking about LIVE - this APT has worked this aspect very firmly into the whole exhibition and in this month APT 8 becomes LIVE with a rich programme of events taking place and the first one is on Sunday the 31st of January 2016.

At 11 am to 200 pm at River Lounge GOMA Super critical mass public workshop. Go along and explore the unique acoustics of the gallery with the Federation Handbells. No experience necessary, all welcome and it will help create an event for the closing weekend of the 9th and 10th of April 2016.

At 100pm at Gallery 1.1 Come along to "There is no there" current events portrayed through choreographed movement, gestures and sounds in collaboration with students from QUT creative industries faculty.

12.30 Pavilion walk Curator Highlights on West Asia and artists from that region.

2.30 pm Cinema B Love discussion forum considering how contemporary art operates in the context of an art museum.

All the above events are Free and some, as you can see, are interactive and collaborative. Explore one or all and enjoy the sensations of touch, sound, and seeing.
