Autumn in the Botanic Gardens
One of the best things about school holidays in autumn is that you can get outside and have some great fun in the sun without the heat. Botanic Gardens of South Australia have a great school holiday program this autumn holidays.

The program is designed to promote fun and hands-on learning about people, the environment and plants. Events are at the Adelaide Botanic Garden and Mt Lofty Botanic Garden and are suitable for various ages ranging from 5 to 13 years old and while some activities attract a small fee, many are free.

Bookings for children are essential, however, although each child must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver at all times, adults do not need to book.

Autumn Colours Mobile Photography (9 13 years, 1 hour)
Tuesday 24 April and Thursday 26 April 2018 at 10.30 am


Budding photographers can come along and learn mobile device photography skills, macro photography using a 30x lens attachment (provided) and how to edit their photos using mobile apps.

Held at the stunning Mt Lofty Botanic Garden, the autumn colours of April is a perfect setting for the capturing of some amazing displays.

Participants will need their own tablet or mobile device and will need to have downloaded the free app "Snapseed" to the device prior to the session.

Cost is $15 per child and bookings are essential. Meet at the Chris Steele Scott Pavilion at Mt Lofty Garden (closest to lower carpark).

Singing in the Rainforest (5 12 years, 1 hour)
Monday 16 April, Wednesday 18 April and Friday 20 April 2018 at 2.30 pm


Join Michael Mills (Narrator) for a musical adventure through the Adelaide Botanic Garden and discover that there is more to the forest than the trees. Learn the importance of rainforests in the natural world and where stories are made, songs are sung and dreams turn to dance.

Encounter Jeremiah Shadwell (tree-chopper), Marvin Marley (Guardian of the World's Rainforests) and Capital Melvin Kelvin of the Interplanetary Botanical Investigatory Service along with many other surprise characters.

Cost is $20 per child and bookings are essential. Meet at the northern end of the Bicentennial Conservatory at Adelaide Botanic Garden.

Garden Critters (6 12 years, 1 hour)
Thursday 19 April and Thursday 26 April 2018 at 1.30 pm


Get creative making cute critters using botanic bits such as leaves, sticks and googly eyes to bring your creature to life. Then take your creature home!

This activity uses hot glue guns and therefore parental/carer supervision is required at all times.

Cost is $12 per child and bookings are essential. Located in the Lecture Theatre of the Goodman Building, Adelaide Botanic Garden.

Making Fire, Making Glue (1 hour) FREE
Thursday 24 April 2018 at 1.30 pm


Has your child ever asked 'how do I make that?'. This workshop will teach how Aboriginal people make fire and glue using only what they can find in the Australian bush.

No bookings required. Located at the Adelaide Botanic Garden, if the weather is fine, meet on the Schomburgk Pavilion. If it is raining, go to the Goodman Building Lecture Theatre.

Dreaming Story Telling (1 hour) FREE
Tuesday 17 April 2018 at 10.30 am


Hear Aboriginal Dreaming stories and understand what they teach us about life. Find out how to identify tracks and traces in the environment and how to interpret them.

No bookings required. Meet at the Goodman Building Lecture Theatre.

The Gardens are magnificent with splendour and colour at this time of year, come along early and explore the colours, textures and sounds of the gardens. Bring a picnic and spend the day.

The Adelaide Botanic Garden is located on North Terrace, Adelaide and can be reached easily by public transport. If you wish to drive, parking can be found at the Goodman Building and State Herbarium carpark on Hackney Road and costs $2.60 per hour with a 4 hour limit Monday to Friday. There is also parking for $8 all day on Hackney Road between Plane Tree Drive and Botanic Drive.

Entrances to the Mount Lofty Botanic Garden are on Summit Road and Piccadilly Road Crafers, where the upper and lower car parks are located. Parking costs $1 for the first hour or $2 for a day. A map of the gardens is located at the website, which includes lots of information about what can be found in the garden.

Parking machines at both parks are coin-operated, so please ensure you bring your spare change.
