Appiness is great food and service in a vibrant setting

"Don't Worry, Be Appy" commands the slogan on the front step as you enter Appy Eatery. And really, why wouldn't you be happy? Situated in Elgin Street - still central, but out of the hubbub of Lygon Street, Appy Eatery feels immediately comfortable and welcoming. Open for six months, the decor is new and fresh, the concept (according to hospitality specialist Ryan Winston, who recently joined the team) minimalist. It features off-white walls, blonde timber tables and stools, padded bench seats along one wall, with perhaps one extravagant furnishing, an impressive, large spoked light fitting at the front of the cafe.

We sat in the front window, to enjoy the natural light streaming in. The coffees were quick to arrive, decorated with some pretty coffee art.

Ryan suggested that rather than our selecting from the menu, he would choose some dishes for us to try. No problem! As it turns out, we are served exactly what we'd have chosen anyway: house granola with coconut yoghurt and seasonal fruit ($16), and broccoli and buckwheat salad with cashew cream and popcorn nuts ($18). Both dishes are vegan, the latter is also gluten-free.

In fact, there is quite a strong focus in the menu on dietary considerations, with many of the dishes vegan, vegetarian or gluten-free (or with GF or vegetarian options available).

When the granola arrived, it definitely had the 'wow' factor, with the fresh berries looking like jewels on the plate. It was served with poached pears and prunes, which provided extra flavour and texture. The granola itself had just the right note of crunchiness and sweetness, and the coconut yoghurt was delicious.

Granola - tastes as good as it looks

The broccoli and buckwheat salad is served in an imaginative way, presented to look like a tree. The 'tree trunk' is the broccoli stalk, split in half, and it looks great, very organic. The flavours were appealing too; what I really liked was the subtle kick from the light drizzle of chilli oil. The crunchy popcorn nuts provide interest too.

For something different, we tried one of the dishes from Appy Eatery's sandwich menu - the BLT ($13) (also vegan). In this case, though, 'BLT' stood for beetroot salad, leek bechamel and green tomato. The vibrant colours made this roll so appealing!

On the side were some house-made sweet potato chips. Even though I was pretty much full by now, I couldn't resist finishing them off, they were just so tasty.

Appy Eatery's menu is not extensive - it easily fits on one page - but it has been carefully thought out to have wide appeal. As noted above, all the dishes we sampled were vegan, but were completely satisfying, even to we non-vegetarians.

Appy Eatery is also licensed, offering a small selection of beers and wines.

So whether you're after a leisurely breakfast, or an amazing sandwich perhaps washed down with a Peroni, I encourage you to make time to go and visit Appy Eatery - you won't be disappointed!

Appy Eatery is located at 156 Elgin Street, Carlton. It's open six days: from 7am - 4pm Monday to Thursday, 8am - 4pm Saturday.

Their website is, at this stage, fairly basic, so it's worth checking out the Facebook page for updates and more images.
