Dr Alan Wallace, one of the world's foremost meditation teachers, is presenting an enlightening 6-day non-residential urban retreat in Melbourne, entitled 'The Four Close Applications of Mindfulness.'
Held from July 27th to August 1st in The Community Room at Abbotsford Convent, Dr Alan Wallace will teach key contemplative techniques which were developed to help people free themselves from mental affliction by cultivating and applying mindfulness to their experience in four different domains: the body, feelings, the mind, and phenomena generally.
A central theme in these teachings will be the cultivation of the discerning mindfulness we need to distinguish between what is presented to our senses and what is conceptually imposed by our distorting minds.
All are welcome to attend this retreat, regardless of one's background or religion. The spirit of the event is one of curious, critical, non-dogmatic inquiry and self-discovery.
The retreat is suitable for anyone who wants to investigate for themselves the causes of suffering in their own lives and to discover what is of universal value in a Buddhist perspective on the means of attaining genuine happiness and flourishing.
Each day will consist of lectures, guided meditations and discussions led by Alan Wallace. In order to cultivate conditions that support concentrated and deepening practice, participation in the retreat will involve a commitment to observing silence on some of the days of the retreat (except during the questions and answers session).
