Secretly nestling in Hawthorndene's woodland, the thrills of the BMX track on Watahuna Avenue, Hawthorndene are waiting to be discovered. Its natural setting give kids a sense of adventure as they tackle the compacted earth jumps, race between the trees and slide on the mud or dirt depending on the weather. Plus the trees give plenty of shade in the summer months.

The jumps range from a few centimetres up to a couple of metres high so there is a challenge here for riders of all abilities – just make sure riders are wearing a helmet and any appropriate padding, and the under 10s are supervised. Also, to help with the facility's longevity, take note of the sign which requests you not to climb on the jumps.

Look out for the 'tyre tree' – it appears riders have taken out their frustrations with flat tyres by flinging them onto the top branches!

There's a reasonable amount of parking and adults can keep an eye on the little ones going round the beginners track on a conveniently placed bench. Furthermore, it's open 24 hours a day and toilet facilities are just a short walk away.

Built by City of Mitcham Council in 2012; you can see how the track was constructed by viewing this short video:

The BMX track is part of the of Apex Park complex and there's more parking at the other end of the park. Younger children will love the fenced in playground here which has swings, slides, an action station and a 'hang and glide'.

There are also picnic benches, electric BBQs (complete with a shelter built by The Lions), and tennis courts.

Take a walk in the woods.
Plus you can also take a short stroll round the woods and explore the little creek running along-side the park.

All this and it's only a half hour drive from the city.

Once you've finished jumping the jumps and your other activities, head over to Joan's Pantry café just a short walk away for some well-deserved refreshments.
