Photography enthusiasts, armchair travellers and nature-lovers from Perth and beyond will be pleased to learn that the wonderful annual ANZANG photography exhibition will once again be here in town, from Thursday April 9th until Monday June 1st. Showcasing the most highly commended entries from last year's Australian Geographic ANZANG Nature Photographer of the Year competition, the exhibition will consist of dozens of amazing images portraying the flora, fauna and landscapes of Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and Antarctica.
An initiative of Australian Geographic and the South Australian Museum, ANZANG Nature Photographer of the Year is widely considered to be Australia's most prestigious nature photography competition, attracting entries from some of the country's most talented photographers. With several categories including animal behaviour, threatened species, landscape, botanical, our impact on the environment, interpretative and monochrome, as well as a special category for junior photographers, the standard of work is extremely high and therefore a visit to one of exhibition venues is highly recommended. Art has always been a powerful vehicle for raising public awareness about a host of issues, and this exhibition is no exception. Exquisitely beautiful, the photographs provide viewers with a glimpse into some of Australasia's last great wilderness areas and the unique creatures that are endemic to them. It also helps us to appreciate how vulnerable these are to human interference, and therefore highlights the great responsibility that we all share to protect them. In this sense, the exhibition is an ingenious tool for educating Australians about the importance of conserving our environment.
This year's ANZANG Nature Photographer of the Year exhibition will highlight entries from the 2014 competition, and will be held at the Western Australian Museum. Situated in the heart of Northbridge at the Perth Cultural Centre, the museum is one of the city's most vibrant cultural spaces. Since most children love nature, the exhibition would be a great destination for a day out in the city and the perfect way to introduce them to issues relating to environmental conservation. Be sure to check out the wonderful Discovery Centre on the ground floor of the museum afterwards, as there are always plenty of affordable (and sometimes free) nature-based activities, games, crafts and videos to enjoy there.
In a nutshell, if you're a nature-lover who loves photography, the ANZANG Nature Photographer of the Year exhibition is an event that you definitely won't want to miss. In addition, an hour or so spent admiring the spectacular images may even be enough inspire you to enter into next year's competition. To find out more about the Perth exhibition, visit the
