April 25, 2016 marks the centenary of the ANZAC Day commemoration, with the first of these being held throughout Australia and the United Kingdom on April 25, 1916, one year after the fateful Gallipoli landing in World War I.

This event will be marked at ANZAC Cottage with their now traditional Sunset Service held at 5:15pm, 'at the going down of the sun'. The last ANZAC Day service on the Australian mainland is extremely child friendly and a moving family experience.

This very friendly community based service pays honour to the community and those who have served Australia in any conflict.

Children can contribute

The ceremony will be preceded by a free wreath-making workshop for children at 3.00pm. This allows the young visitors time to fashion their own wreaths in readiness for the wreath-laying component of the Sunset Service.

At home or away

This very special and very personal commemoration also reflects on the sacrifice made by those who were left at home, as well as the servicemen and women who gave their all for their country.

Come early and peek

All are welcome to attend the Sunset Service. However, ANZAC Cottage will be open from 3.00pm for visitors to tour the Cottage and view the changes recently made to the exhibits. Entry is free with afternoon tea available for a gold coin donation.

A living memorial to the ANZAC Spirit

There are many impressive monuments, but memorials built, maintained and used by local communities enshrine that personal commitment in keeping the ANZAC spirit alive. The carefully maintained War Memorials in our suburbs, towns and local communities, well attended on ANZAC Day are living proof.

ANZAC Cottage, at No.38 Kalgoorlie Street in Mount Hawthorn, has a unique history; constructed as a practical monument to commemorate the Anzac's participation in the First World War, the first memorial to the Great War built in Australia. Private Cuthbert John Porter the recipient, living in the cottage for 48 years, raising the Australian flag every dawn. Anne Chapple, granddaughter of John Porter, brings a personal aspect to the service held at this unique memorial.
