On
Sunday,
February 10,
2019, the
Friends of ANZAC Cottage will celebrate the
103rd Anniversary of
ANZAC cottage, by paying tribute to those who unwittingly built a memorial to themselves. The Cottage, situated at 38 Kalgoorlie Street, Mt Hawthorn, will be open from
1:00pm until
4:00pm, with talks at
1:45pm and repeated at
2:45pm.
The first
Open Day of the year will focus on a number of fellows who helped to build the Cottage and went on to enlist in the AIF once the Cottage was completed. There is no evidence that participating in the ANZAC Cottage project inspired them, but it would be nice to think so.
Sadly, not all survived the war and it is somewhat chilling to think that they built their own memorial.
One of these men was
William Henry Lamond, a popular resident of Mount Hawthorn, who was married and lived in Fairfield Street, prior to enlisting in the AIF. In civilian life, William worked as a traffic inspector for the Perth City Council.
A member of the 51st Battalion, William was wounded in April 1918, but recovered to rejoin his comrades, only to be killed at Villers Bretonneux in July later that year, and is buried in the Adelaide Cemetery, Villers Bretonneux.
Anne Chapple will reveal more about William and some of the other 200 workers from the Mount Hawthorn community who so willingly contributed money, building materials, furniture, their skills and so much more to this imaginative project.
Everyone is invited
On this special occasion, the
first 103 visitors will receive their
very own tiny birthday cake and the
Subdividers will provide entertainment from
2:30pm to
4:00pm, just as the Police Pipe band performed for the workers 1916.
How amazed and proud these men and women would be if they knew that their work, which helped to make this historic icon a reality, would still be honoured and respected 103 years later. The Friends of Anzac Cottage invite you to join them as they celebrate the anniversary of the Cottage's construction.
