An artist and freelance writer, I enjoy exploring the city with my children and the never ending quest for great coffee.
Where do you go when you want to see a theatre performance? You go to the theatre, right? Wrong!
Not your typical theatre space
The Anywhere Theatre Festival was started in Brisbane in 2011 and continues this year giving performers and audience members the chance to experience great shows anywhere but in theatres.
During the Anywhere Theatre Festival you can see performances in alleys, in warehouses, and even in your own home. There are online performances, performances via twitter, performances in cafes, at farms and in playgrounds. The most amazing venue I think, is a show called The Safety Device of Elisha Otis which is actually performed in a lift. In fact, the Anywhere Theatre Festival is all about getting performances out of the theatre and into the community - anywhere.
There are shows in the Festival that will be great for the whole family to attend. We are looking forward to 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea which is going to be in a disused warehouse, and also The Gremlins performed at Reverse Garbage in Wooloongabba.
A more adult audience is well catered for with comedy shows such as How to be a Lady, Sexytime and In Search of Atlantis. These three shows will actually come to your house and perform in your lounge room, so why not get a group of friends together and organise yourself an amazing night in?
The Anywhere Theatre Festival takes place from 10th to 19th May. You can pick up their program in numerous cafes around Brisbane or visit the website for more details and booking. The shows are very reasonably priced and many are free.
I'm so excited about this exciting opportunity to see talented performers and enjoy some fabulous innovative shows, outside of the theatre. Perhaps we'll see you there.
