Wow, what a show. Although the first performance of Anything Goes by Cole Porter was over 80 years ago in 1934 it is still an incredibly entertaining show to watch today. It definitely helps that the performers cast in this production by Opera Australia were absolutely top notch. Each character was played in a unique and exceptional way, but it was Caroline O'Connor who stole the show, and rightly so - she's incredibly talented. It's worth the ticket price just to see her perform. Todd McKenney was also excellent and very amusing as Lord Evelyn Oakleigh.

The show itself is set almost entirely onboard the S.S. American ocean liner. It centers around the character of Billy Crocker who stows aboard the ship at the last minute in order to try and woo Hope Harcourt. However, Hope is set to marry Lord Evelyn Oakleigh in three days time. As you can imagine, antics ensue as Billy attempts to win Hope over with the help of Reno Sweeney. Although the plot is questionable at times it's all forgiven by the incredible cast performances, excellent music, and intense tap sequence just before interval.

The only minor letdown really was the set. There were some odd choices in the set design - namely that the ship's bow was placed behind where all the action was occurring, which was a confusing choice. Otherwise the costume design and choreography were both excellent.

Anything Goes is definitely worth seeing before it leaves port on the 16th August. It's playing at the Lyric Theatre, QPAC and tickets can be purchased from the QPAC website .
