Come and taste a huge variety of vintage apples
In 1999 the Heritage Fruits Society took over the running of Petty's Orchard, a large property that was brimming with more than 200 old and rare apple varieties under threat of extinction. Once on the orchard, you will feel as though you've traveled deep into the beautiful Victorian countryside, but in reality it's only about 25 minutes' drive from the CBD.
From February to May 2015, the HFS will host Antique Apple Tastings, located amongst the trees of the antique apple orchard. It's a unique opportunity to taste a lot of heritage species of freshly-picked apples in a picturesque location and it shouldn't be missed. There's a small fee of $15 - $20, and the money goes straight back into the society's care for the orchard.
Various varieties of apple will be offered to taste depending on what's at their peak, and there is a astounding range of flavours, textures, colours and origins of apples available here. Hosted by some knowledgeable volunteers, the tasting will lead you through many varieties - they make it extra interesting by offering stories behind the apples, too.
Coffee, tea and biscuits are available, and a short but interesting tour through the orchard rows is also included. The Heritage Fruit Society have nurtured these trees and applied various growing techniques within the orchard to also further develop knowledge of antique orchard management.
At the end of the tasting, all the varieties of apples tasted are available from purchase straight from the orchard.
