Antigone – heartBeast Theatre

heartBeast's powerful and impassioned reimagining of this great tragedy is brought to life – weeping, gasping, fighting – in the evocative environs of Brisbane's historic underground reservoir.heartBeast Theatre is proudly presenting a strictly limited season of Jean Anouilh's Antigone at the historic Spring Hill Underground Reservoir this June.Tickets are now on sale through Trybooking (12 performances only).
HeartBeast Artistic Director David Paterson has charged the story with modern-day tensions and a dynamic physicality. "The story is timeless and so powerful - it takes a very hard look at what it means to love and commit yourself to your family, conflicting with what it means to lead a nation," he said."So we have these very polarised positions held by two very stubborn, prideful and passionate characters, who create a moral thunder when they clash, and yet are both doomed in their own ways," said David.Written by French playwright Jean Anouilh and based on the Ancient Greek tragedy, Antigone is dark, powerful and yet playful.
King Creon has declared that anyone who attempts to bury Polynices' body will be put to death. However young Antigone, determined to honour her brother, defies the King and sneaks past his guards to bury Polynices. She is caught, and is taken to the King. Her life is at risk, and the King is compromised, but they are both determined to fight to the bitter end."It's dark and challenging stuff, though audiences will really feel for the terrible and intractable predicaments of these characters," said David."We're really lucky to have some fantastic young and seasoned actors who are just exciting to watch - they're absolutely dynamic - especially Bek Schmidt and Paddy Farrelly, whose performances are gripping."
The cast includes Bek Schmidt as Antigone, Paddy Farrelly as Creon, Eleonora Ginardi as Eurydice, Brodie Greenhalgh as Haemon, Josh Lyons as Guard, Jane Schon as Ismene, Linda Shapcott as Nurse and Aidan O'Donnell as Messenger.Directed by David Paterson with Assistant Director Steve Pearton, the production features design by Tracy Klupfel, lighting and sound by Keegan O'Neill and music by Josh Lyons and Brodie Greenhalgh.Don't miss this opportunity to see this powerful and ancient story in the dark underground of Brisbane's historic reservoir. The season will run from 2nd to 17th June with performances at 7:30pm (9 performances only).
