Most people do not recognise that there is poverty right here in Australia, so that's why will be held this October to make people aware of this reality and encourage everyone to do something about it.

aims to strengthen the public's understanding of the causes and consequences of poverty both here in Australia and around the world. It was first established in recognition of International Anti-Poverty Day (October 17). Of course, this is an important issue that needs to be addressed by our society in collaborative ways. That is why around the country during , there will be various activities that you can participate in to show your support for action against poverty. These activities are organised by the National Facilitating Group for , which includes representatives from over 20 national organisations, including major charities and social welfare groups.

Last year, over 450 activities were organised during , and were supported by more than 600 organisations. It is estimated that these activities were attended by over 10 000 people. And this year, it is set to be better than ever. There are three main events that are happening in and around Brisbane.

The first will be coinciding with October 17, the International Anti-Poverty Day, from 9:30am-1pm. This is a free event where members of the community can donate or swap clothes and toys, whether second-hand or new (please call 5540 1500 for more information). The second event that will be happening on the same day from 10am will be the 'Humble Jumble', where parents will be able to bring an item to swap for a ticket. The ticket can then be exchanged for clothing, books, blankets and the like (please phone 5528 9691 for more details). One of the events that almost everyone will be able to participate in is the BBQ, arranged by the Red Cross. This event, like the rest, is free to participate in (please call 4922 8056). For more activities, please visit the website .

If for some reason, you cannot attend one of the activities, there are several ways that you can still be involved. One of the ways is by organising your own event. There are several ideas for this on the website , including promoting a local initiative, providing some practical help to those who need it, or even organising a fundraising event. There are several free promotional materials available via the website . Although you do not need to officially advise the National Facilitating Group for , it would be helpful to send details of your event to them by filling out a registration form, which is also available via the website .

So to address poverty in Australia, do something positive during . For more information, please visit the website .
