If you're a Mads Mikkelsen fan, well, you're a Mads Mikkelsen fan. By that, I mean once you know he's in something you haven't seen, you make a dash for the cinema or try looking for it on the myriad of streaming services.
Mikkelsen plays Martin, who is a depressed teacher and has lost all motivation in his work and his marriage. He goes to work but just goes through the motions and does the same at home.
He meets up with three of his colleagues, who are also his friends, for one of their 40th birthdays. The discussion leads to a Norwegian psychiatrist, whose theory states that having a blood alcohol content of 0.5 is ideal for relaxation and creativity. Martin decides to experiment with this, and his buddies quickly join in.
As can be expected, what follows is a roller-coaster of events, peaking first at success and love, after which there is a steep drop down into despair.
There are two scenes in which Mikkelsen shows his brilliance for depicting human emotions. He is tearing up in one and the director closes in on his face, probably because he is familiar with what Mikkelsen is capable of, and in the other, he is dancing, seemingly celebrating life and freedom. Joy emanates from the screen while he does this, and it puts a smile on the audience's faces.
Thomas Vinterburg, the director, does a great job, just like he did in
The Hunt (2012), which also stars Mikkelsen. I highly recommend it to those who have not seen it and are his fans but be warned, the subject matter of that one is quite controversial.
This one, although not controversial, does touch on societal norms, especially those that are alcohol-related.
Thomas Bo Larsen, Magnus Milang, and Lars Ranthe play the other three people involved in this 'experiment', but I think Larsen plays it best amongst the three.
Quirky and memorable.
