The annual Gnome Festival in Glenbrook in the lower Blue Mountains has to be one of the most novel ways to spend Australia Day. Over 1000 gnomes and their carers will come together for the event, which will take place in Glenbrook Park from 9.00am to 3.00pm.

Part Australia Day celebration, part gnome convention, the Gnome Festival is similar to most community festivals in many ways. It will have a flag raising ceremony, a market with over 100 stalls (including community and information stalls), free on-stage entertainment, rides for children, activities for the whole family, and more.

However, there's then events like the gnome competition, which will try to find the best and wackiest gnomes out there. Guests are encouraged to bring their own gnomes along and even dress them up. If you have one you want to enter, just turn up for registration (it's free) between 8.30am and 11.30am. There are heaps of different categories ( see here ), and judging will take place at noon.

2015 is the fifteenth year a gnome-filled Australia Day event has run. You can find more details about the one being run this year, as it's posted on the event Facebook page .

Directions to the event can be found here .
