It has been almost 100 years since the American comic strip Little Orphan Annie, by Harold Gray went to print. The strip took its name from the 1885 poem "Little Orphant Annie" by James Whitcomb Riley, and made its print debut on August 5, 1924 in the New York Daily News, following the wide-ranging adventures of Annie, her dog Sandy and her benefactor Oliver "Daddy" Warbucks. Since then, and demonstrating its timelessness, 'Annie' has inspired the Broadway musical Annie in 1977, as well as a radio show in 1930 and film adaptations in 1938, 1982, 1999 and most recently, 2014.
Northern Light's presentation of 'Annie' is led by Director Fran Edwards and Assistant Director Sue Pole, with Musical Director Katie Packer and Choreographer Laura Brook. With equal measures of pluck and positivity, Annie will be played by Holly Abbott and follows the story of an orphan girl who charms everyone's hearts despite a next-to-nothing start in a 1930s New York City Orphanage. His (mis)adventures start in the orphanage under the cruel watch of embittered Miss Hannigan, played by Robyn Brookes.
With the help of the other girls in the orphanage, Annie discovers the wondrous world of New York City in adventure after fun-filled adventure. Annie finds a new home and family in billionaire, Oliver Warbucks, played by Gavin Cianci, and his personal secretary Grace Farrell, played by Nikki Gaertner Eaton. In a plight to find her birth parents, characters arise seeking a generous reward as the plot explores the meaning of family, honesty, friendship and a host of favourite songs you know and love.

Playing the title role of 'Annie', Holly says that she is "absolutely bursting with excitement about being cast as Annie - I love this character - she is fun and feisty, a little like me that she is a dreamer. I'm so excited about getting to know all the cast and especially excited about getting to sing and dance throughout the whole show! I love every song!". No doubt the audience will feel much the same way with favourite tunes such as 'Tomorrow', 'It's a Hard Knock Life' and 'I Don't Need Anything But You' in the wonderful score by Charles Strouse and Martin Charnin.
Adjacent to the Shedley Theatre, the City of Playford unveiled the newly developed Prince George Plaza on Friday, creating a space to relax and enjoy pre or post show, and a tribute to Elizabeth's royal connection. Also acknowledging the passing of Thomas Meehan in August, who authored the musical 'Annie', as well as 'The Producers' and 'Hairspray' it seems a timely opportunity for Northern Light to bring together a senior cast with tremendous experience to match a bubbly group of orphans and present 'Annie' to Adelaide audiences.
