The story of Anne with an 'E'
The classic tale Anne of Green Gables is being brought to life once again on the Stirling Community Theatre (SCT) stage this June.

The script is based on the 1908 novel by author Lucy Maud Montgomery and tells the story of Anne Shirley, a young orphan girl who is mistakenly sent to Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert, a middle-aged brother and sister who had intended to adopt a boy to help them on their farm. Follow Anne's antics as she falls into a series of scrapes, develops a bosom friendship with her class-mate Diana Barry and an unspoken academic rivalry with Gilbert Blythe who teases her about her red hair. Life will never be the same now that Anne is at Green Gables.

Anne of Green Gables is directed by Di Mason, Hills Youth Theatre (HYT) tutor who has been involved with SCT for almost 20 years as a director, choreographer, performer and crew member and is thrilled to be directing this show, bringing it back to life with HYT.

On her involvement with HYT, Di reflects "My time with HYT began back in 1998 when my son joined the drama classes at Stirling, under the wonderful tuition of Joan Leslie, one of the original tutors. I was a parent helper backstage in 2000 when Joan Leslie wrote the script for Anne of Green Gables and my son had the privilege of playing the role of Gilbert Blythe. And so I have come full circle, after 15 years I am now honoured to be directing the show, having adapted Joan's original script with fond memories of a time gone by. (I have) new vision of the show and hopes and dreams that it will fulfil each personal interpretation of a wonderful story that we all read and loved in our childhood."

The script for this stage version was originally written by HYT patron, Joan Leslie and performed by HYT 15 years ago. Joan has written, adapted and directed many classic tales with scripts cleverly tailored to suit the dozens of young performers involved and keep the story moving through clear dialog, music and movement.

"To direct a show of this magnitude and find places and spaces for 100 children as well as enable them all to have at least several lines of dialogue in the show is a feat in itself. I am so proud of each and every student that has worked so hard, as part of this huge team, to bring the story to life. There is a wonderful sense of community at the Hills Youth Theatre, as parents assist in every technical aspect, publicity, costuming and as part of the crew to bring this story to life on the stage. It is a shared experience that all the students will remember and treasure" comments Di.

HYT is a community based non-profit organisation which provides quality drama education and performance opportunities to students aged from 5 to 25, in the Stirling and surrounding hills areas. The aim of classes is to provide a fun approach to dramatic art through practical experience, that is, drama games and other drama skills. Many former students would be able to fondly reminisce of their time at HYT and attest to the skills, value and experience learnt through drama tuition and performance.
