Are you an artist who adores the sea? Fancy capturing the majesty of the ocean and competing for $15 000?
The Mission to Seafarers Victoria (MtSV) is calling for entries for the annual ANL Maritime Art Awards and Exhibition, Australia's leading maritime art awards. The awards celebrate the sea and everything nautical. Do respond to the timeless theme, 'The Relationship between Humanity and the Sea'.
While the entry fee is only $33, total prize money equals $27,000, with $15,000 to go to the 2014 ANL Maritime Art Award winner. Award winners will be announced at the opening of the exhibition on the 3rd of October 2014.
While we sleep, work and play 1.4 million merchant seafarers traverse the seas, transporting goods and services. Indeed, they are responsible for 95 per cent of world trade. Annually, 60,000 of these seafarers visit Port Melbourne.
"Life on the sea can be very lonely. The Mission to Seafarers provides community, connectivity and services that support seafarers who otherwise live and work in isolated and often dangerous conditions at sea. When their ship is in port, they make use of the MtSV on-shore facilities that provide access to the internet and phones to contact home. It is also a place for respite and recreation, also support during times of injustice or distress." says Andrea Fleming, CEO of the MtSV.
Adds Fleming, "The Art Prize advocates the well-being of the seafaring community through art."
Artists, you will be competing in four award categories:
- The 2014 ANL Maritime Art Award
- The ASP Traditional Maritime Award
- The Bendigo Wealth Emerging Artist Award
- The PB Towage People's Choice Award
All works exhibited are for sale and 33% of the sale proceeds go toward supporting the work at the Mission. Entries close Monday, 2nd September 2014. Selected paintings will be displayed for public viewing from 3rd to 31st October at the historic seafarers' centre, 717 Flinders Street, Docklands.
