The Happiest Refugee is comedian
Anh Do 's award winning memoir. It tells the story of his family fleeing Vietnam and arriving in Australia as refugees. Over the course of the book, Do talks about his childhood, his attempts to make money, his relationships with his parents, how he pursued his now-wife Suzanne and more.
The book won the Indie Book of the Year Award in 2011, as well as the non-fiction category. It also won the ABIA (Australian Book Industry Awards) Book of the Year, Biography of the Year and Newcomer of the Year, among many other awards. I has become a bestseller. A children's version of the memoir, titled
The Little Refugee, won an Indie award in the Children's category this year.
Drawing on the popularity of
The Happiest Refugee, Anh Do has created a new stage show based on the book which sees him in his element. After all, he began his career as a stand-up comedian, telling stories about his own life.
Do has won awards in this line of work too (as well as those for his book). He won the title of Sydney Comedian of the Year in 1999. He also won the NSW Triple J Raw Comedy Competition in the same year and the National Green Faces Comedy Competition in 2000.
In The Happiest Refugee: Live, Do retells the story of his life as he combines his well-developed stand-up comedy with real stories, photos and filmed pieces. He explores the joys and sorrows he has experienced, but be sure the audience will leave on a high. That's Do's style of comedy.
Do will be performing The Happiest Refugee: Live at the State Theatre. Originally there were to be only two shows, but Do will now be performing over three nights in July, from Thursday 19 to Saturday 21. The shows are approximately 80 minutes long and are recommended for children over 13.
