Featuring members of Paul Kelly's touring band, leading country music artists Angus Gill and Seasons of Change have written and released brand new material and will be sharing it with audiences across Australia through April and May 2023.
The 23-date national tour is called "Departure & Arrival", taken from the group's first single from the new material, and will kick off with its first shows in Victoria before heading to venues in South Australia, New South Wales, ACT and Queensland.
The tour is pleased to include renowned fiddle player, Pixie Jenkins (from the USA) and Billy Miller (formerly from The Ferrets)
About Angus Gill
Angus Gill is an Australian singer, producer, comedian and more. He has an ARIA awards nomination, four critically acclaimed ARIA chart-topping studio albums and eight number-one radio chart hits to his name. He has supported Kris Kristofferson, collaborated with international music legends such as Steve Earle, Jim Lauderdale and Charles Esten and is the youngest Australian male artist to have performed on the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, Tennessee.
2022 was a standout year for Angus which saw him win a coveted Country Music Association Golden Guitar Award
I asked Angus to tell us about the band, tour and the creation of the new material.
Department and Arrival was created during COVID. What impact did this have on you creatively and in developing the piece?
%%
When we were first plunged into lockdown, I made a decision after a few days of uneasiness and restlessness that I was going to use the downtime as a creative opportunity. Despite the melange of show cancellations and the financial impacts at the time, I do feel COVID was somewhat of a blessing for me creatively.
It made me into a much more well-read, well-rounded, well-honed artist. I became a vinyl hoarder in that time, I made several records, which I got ARIA & Golden Guitar nominations (and a win) from, I read more books than I've read before, I wrote many songs over Zoom and I also allowed myself the time & space to work on my own solo songs.
Many of which are on this forthcoming Angus Gill & Seasons of Change record. The song Departure & Arrival came together over the course of nearly 3 years because I kept coming back to it in my own time, in between other projects%%.
You bring a strong Australian theming to your lyrics and sound. Where do you draw inspiration for your songs?
%%
I get a lot of ideas from the books I read and the things I observe. I started Departure & Arrival when I was re-reading Alain De Botton's Art of Travel.
The original lyrical hook for this song was something like "between somewhere and now", which eventually became "somewhere between departure & arrival."
I'm always jotting down my thoughts and observations, which often find their way into songs. The Australian theme is not a particularly deliberate thing, but I suppose I do feel a responsibility as a young writer to be an image keeper of our Australian culture, much like a lot of my favourite writers such as Mark Twain, John Steinbeck, Larry McMurtry were to the American culture. %%
You have assembled an outstanding group of artists (including members of Paul Kelly's touring band) for the tour alongside some music legends. What is it like playing alongside these musicians?
%%It's a blast working with the members of the PK band in the studio. Bill McDonald on bass, Cameron Bruce on keyboards, Dan Kelly on guitars and Peter 'Lucky' Luscombe on drums & percussion. They're such a creative, tasteful bunch of players, I really love making music with them.
The tour we are doing is actually stripped back, just Pixie Jenkins and myself for the most part, but we often forget that during our performances, because we are able to get such a full sound with only two of us onstage.
It's a real entertainment experience. There's lots of laughs, poignant, tender & fun moments in the show, as well as some almighty fiddle playing from Pixie. We've also got a few special guests joining us as well. Oz rock legend Billy Miller is joining us in Archie's Creek VIC, and I'm also doing a run of songwriters in the round shows with Kevin Bennett and Kevin Welch (USA) in the first week of May. %%
Winning a golden guitar is a significant acknowledgement, particularly among the Country Music community. Was this a pinch-me moment in your career?%%
Definitely was a pinch-me moment. We don't do what we do to win awards, we do it because we love it, but to get a pat on the back like that from the industry is such an incredible feeling. John Williamson presented an award on the night and gave me the biggest wrap while he was up there, saying I was a breath of fresh air and a future bronze statue in Australian country music. To me, that was another 'pinch me' moment of the night, which I'm very grateful for. %%
What are you looking forward to most on this current Australian tour?
I'm really looking forward to the people and the places we're playing on tour. I love the change of scenery, playing new venues in towns we've not been to before, but also revisiting ones we have done before, reconnecting with people that have been following us for some time and meeting plenty of new ones. It's just so much fun!
