is like a mix bag of M&M's – there's a little bit of everything in there. Upon entering the shop front, you don't quite know what to look at or where to start. The space, on Angove street in North Perth, houses products from not just one but several retailers – a collection of them, if you will. This means you can find anything from homewares, furniture, fresh flowers, women's, men's and children's clothing, accessories, jewellery, candles, greeting cards, the list goes on.
The latest addition sees the opening of a cafe and garden which has come to be known as
Miss Watson's Garden cafe . Combining shops with cafes is a tried and tested idea – think
Chinta in Doubleview – and it certainly suits both the idea behind and location of the , situated on the cafe strip of Angove street.
The garden area is basic but not in a bad way. Fitted with furniture from the store next door (much of it with the labels attached), you'll find benches, chairs and crates to sit on, all in wooden tones which gives the area an earthy feel.
During my visit to the cafe I ordered a coffee ($4.50) and a chocolate brownie ($4.00). The coffee was great and hot enough that you could sip it intermittently while browsing the store next door, without it going cold. The brownie (warmed up, of course!) was exactly what you'd expect from a brownie; no let downs, but not the best I've tasted.
The downside of the cafe is that it is designed as take away only. Sure, you can sit with your coffee in the garden, but you'll be drinking it out of a take away cup - no glass or china here. The same goes for the food, where what you see in the glass cabinets at the register is what you get. The choices range from cakes, slices and muffins to savoury wraps.
Expect any food you order to be served in a cardboard take-away container with a wooden fork. It might be on trend, but unfortunately having the taste of wood mix with every bite of your cake doesn't make for a great flavour.
It isn't the place to go if you're looking for a proper cafe meal but if you're in the mood for good coffee while browsing goods, then is worth a visit. Everything in the store has a definite cool factor. It is filled with unique, handmade pieces from local designers; local being the key word. The retailers are all Australian and a shared space means new designers with smaller collections have somewhere to showcase their work.
The concept of comes from Greg Baker, furniture and homewares designer of Ambassador Home. Along with Ambassador Home, stocks brands such as The Rug Studio, Debra Hayes Flowers, Elk, Gents Hardware and several Upmarket designers - all worth checking out.
