Looking for something to do?

Just a short drive from Melbourne, is Smeaton, a rural town well known for its fertile volcanic soils and goldmining past. It's approximately 132km northwest of Melbourne. And Sunday 6 April, is the perfect day to visit Smeaton for the 20th Anderson's Mill Festival.

Construction of the flour Mill started in 1861 and was operational within six months. However, in spite of its remarkable beginnings, the Mill closed in 1957 after almost 100 years of operation by the Anderson family. This is due to railway lines missing Smeaton and the difficulties of acquiring regular supplies. Machinery was sold for scrap and unfortunately the building started to deteriorate. In 1974, it was listed on the Historic Buildings Register, and was purchased by the State Government in 1987. The Mill stands much like it was more than 100 years ago with the iron water wheel and the five-storey bluestone building.

Organised by Parks Victoria, Hepburn Shire Council and the Newlyn Football Netball Club, the Festival is a family friendly celebration of food, wine and music of the region. Expect a combination of the best local produce, boutique wineries, children's entertainment, music, excellent stalls, demonstrations and much much more.

Foodies will love it here, let me assure you, for a huge range of mouth-watering eats and delicious wines will be on hand to delight the masses. Sample some of the best the region has to offer using the freshest ingredients. Munch on fresh trout rolls, Italian bullboar sausages, beef rolls, breads, pastries and organic veggie burgers. Sample some of the most delicious homemade relishes and sauces, olives and tapenades. And those with a sweet tooth will be in heaven with yummy ice cream, biscuits, cakes and slices.

Some of the best boutique wineries in Victoria will be here showcasing their handcrafted whites, reds and sparkling wine. And if you like it, grab a few bottles to take home. Beer lovers don't fret because there will be boutique beers on offer too.

A fantastic music program has been organised which will add to the vibrant atmosphere of the Festival and browse the stalls for a selection of the best products and services. There will be a huge range of arts and crafts for sale including handmade woollen coats, scented candles and soaps.

Don't leave your kids at home because the children's entertainment area guarantees a great time for all kinds of children.

Of course, don't forget to check out the humongous waterwheel, which will come to life once again for the Festival. Admire the magnificence of what used to be the only source of power for the mill and join the tours of the mill which will take place throughout the day. You'll learn about the fascinating history of the Mill.

Program details and ticketing information will be released closer to the event so make sure you check the Anderson's Mill Festival . This is a great way to start the school holidays, a fantastic day trip from Melbourne and a wonderful event for people of all ages. So save the date for this excellent event and see you there!
