Well, naturally I'd have to be interested in a park that shares my name. is one of the many lovely and reasonably sized parks in the City of Boroondara. It is a haven - an extensive piece of open land located on Anderson Street, Hawthorn East, just off Tooronga Road.



Just as an aside, I learnt something new while researching for this article, and that is that 'Boroondara' comes from an Aboriginal word meaning 'place of shade', and was chosen by government surveyor Robert Hoddle.



was bought by the Council in November 1911 for 2,275 pounds. Originally the 14 acre (5.6 ha.) block was part of a plant nursery known as the Mt. Ida Estate.

Anderson park is set on a fairly steep incline. The top one-third of the park slopes quite noticeably. Below that are two full-sized playing fields. Large terraced steps have been built around one side of one of the grounds, which I assume would both act as a retaining wall for the property and as seating for people watching games played on the grounds.

What I particularly like about this park are two things: its large, well-established trees (in the top section of the park), and its fantastic panoramic views back to Melbourne city. It's a great spot to be (with a camera if you like) at sunset, to see the city buildings silhouetted as the sun goes down.

There is a 1km circuit around the park, which is popular with walkers. The slope of the ground adds challenge to the walk.

Along the southern border of the park are the South Hawthorn Tennis Club and a maternal and child health care centre.



This park is not particularly handy to public transport, but if you don't mind a bit of a walk, you could board the number 70 or 75 tram and get off at the Tooronga Road stop in Riversdale Road; from there it's about a 10 minute walk. Alternatively, catch the Glen Waverley train and alight at Tooronga station; again it's about a 10 minute walk up Tooronga Road.
