Delicious vegetarian and vegan food
Anchan Restaurant is unique in Chiang Mai for its approach to vegetarian food. The dishes are all in some way a nod to Thai cuisine, but fusion food is really the best way to describe it. They use a thoroughly different approach to other restaurants in Chiang Mai to preparing the wonderful traditional vegetables and herbs that are integral to Asian cooking. What works so in their favour though, is that their restraint makes the dishes highly compatible with a Western palate.

Anchan Restaurant has a limited menu of mains, which they change every now and then. This contributes to maintaining the attention to detail and the consistency that they have down pat.

Speaking of their menu, they have a wonderfully fool-proof way of ordering, which helps to overcome the language barriers that can come between you and your food. You will be given a paper menu with all the food and drink options, and you simply mark off your selections.

A handy ordering system

They always have a couple of Thai curries, some stir fries, tofu dishes, soups and fried rice. The menu also helpfully shows which dishes are vegan, so this is another tick in Anchan Restaurant's favour.

Be sure to select a serving of rice if you would like that to accompany your main, as rice is served separately. Also note that in proportion to the mains, the rice servings are very small. If you would like a more balanced approach, perhaps consider ordering two serves of rice per main.

They also have lots of drinks options, including a small selection of wines, beer, juices, iced teas and smoothies.

You can get takeaways here if you choose. Just order at the restaurant and they will advise you when you can collect your order. If they aren't too busy, half an hour is usually standard for two dishes.

Located just off the popular Nimmanhaeminda Road in Chiang Mai, Anchan Restaurant is easy to find. It is above the popular co-working space Mana Co-working, so is a particularly good option for lunch or dinner after spending a day working.

While Chiang Mai is renowned for its outstanding vegetarian and vegan food, there are very few vegetarian restaurants in the Nimman area. Among those, however, Anchan Restaurant can definitely claim the title of best vegetarian restaurant. The food is excellent, the location convenient, the speed of service is pretty good and the place has a nice laid back atmosphere.

And non-vegetarians, don't be scared off! The motto of the place is, after all: 'Vegetarian Food So Delicious You Wont Miss the Meat'. And as my meat eating friends have assured me, they nail it.
