Want a good belly laugh - then book to see Gina Riley
Gina Riley leads a fabulous cast in Melbourne Theatre Company's new production of British writer, Oscar Wilde's classic comedy, An Ideal Husband.

Oscar Wilde started drafting An Ideal Husband back in 1893. At the time, he was pretty distracted by his lover, Lord Alfred Douglas. This was a "romance" and the scandal surrounding it ended up with Wilde in jail two years later.

This was by coincidence, the same year that his plays An Ideal Husband and his other well known and great play, The Importance of Being Earnest opened in London.

This is an opportune time for a comedy about the "hypocritical moralising of politicians" after the Barnaby Joyce affair! Politicians private lives don't quite measure up to what is going on behind the scenes!

This play is possibly not quite as well known as The Importance of Being Earnest, however, it is just as funny and particularly applicable to the time.

The story is about a fine, upstanding politician, Robert Chiltern, who is blackmailed due to some of his past misconducts by his wife's former schoolmate. This politician has it all including the love of his adoring wife. However, this mysterious character threatens to expose a dark secret from his past, and he becomes hopelessly compromised in insider trading, blackmail and deception.

Lady Chiltern then goes to her friend, Lord Goring for advice. He advises compassion in relationships and accepting the other person's faults. Therefore, advises Lord Goring, she should forgive her husband's mistakes and stand by him.

Melbourne Theatre Company's associate director Dean Bryant is well known for his exciting and hilarious takes on classic comedies. Dean will be the director of this play which features the following actors:

Gina Riley - star of that hilarious Kath and Kim
William McInnes, veteran actor
Zindzi Okenyo
Michelle Lim Davidson
Brent Hill
Jem Lai
Joseph Lai
Josh Price
Greta Sherriff

Here is Gina Riley talking about the play:

It will be playing from 16th July to 18th August 2018, and will be on at the Arts Centre Melbourne, Playhouse, 100 St Kilda Road, Melbourne.
