Last night, I had the pleasure of attending An Evening with Owls event run by local business, Raptor Vision.

It was a great success. Over a hundred people came along to watch the Raptor Vision show and have their photo taken with an owl.

Jason and Crystal, the owners of Raptor Vision and work closely with Dave from Dave - The Bird Dude to put on this event.

An Evening with Owls was the first twilight event run by Raptor Vision and was extremely well priced. Entry prices for adults was $12 per person, $8 for children and free for children under 5 years of age.

The event was held at Ewan Maddock Dam Camp on Steve Irwin Way, Sunshine Coast.

The event started at 5pm with a sausage sizzle and the opportunity to buy raffle tickets to win an owl portrait by Fotoflair Professional Photographer , Darren Smith.

Darren's portraits of the owls are simply stunning and I noticed quite a few patrons snapping them up for their owl collection and as keepsakes of this special event.

Attendees were treated to the opportunity to have their photo taken with their own cameras holding an owl. The cost was $5 each person. This was extremely popular and nearly everyone lined up for a chance to have personal photo with an owl.

A little after 6pm, Jason started the show where he brought out four different owls and the crowd were able to see how owls fly, how they land, and catch their prey. This was a magnificent part of the show.

Members were chosen out of the audience to wear the leather glove and have an owl fly over the crowd directly to them. This was a very special event.

Jason talked about how owls are silent predators and the importance of conservation in the minds of the public. He touched on the problem of secondary poisoning and encouraged people to be aware that the be mouse and rat hunters they could have are owls, rather than baiting rodents, he suggested that we need to consider ways to ensure the owls habitat is kept in tact so that they can do their job.

Jason discussed the importance of keeping a balance in the wild between predators and their prey. He stated that, "nature is in perfect balance."

Kids were mesmerised and the crowd hushed when the owls came out. Jason had asked people to be very quiet as two of the birds where on their public debut.

We met five owls:
  • a male Barn owl, Twilight;
  • a female Barking owl, Eclipse;
  • a female Australian Masked owl, Talon;
  • a male Australian Masked owl, Wesley; and
  • a gorgeous 27 day old owlet, who is yet to be named via a Facebook Competition, Raptor Vision.

  • An Evening with Owls was a fantastic experience that the whole family enjoyed.

    It was such a magical night.
