Boffins Books and Perth College are proudly presenting an evening with Olympic Gold Medalist Leisel Jones at Perth College on Tuesday 27 October, 2015.This special event is being held to celebrate the release of Leisel's brand new book "Body Lengths".For the first time, Leisel talks candidly about her life and career, from winning two silver medals at the Sydney Olympic Games in 2000 at just 15 years of age and then going on to win gold at Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008. At London 2012 Leisel became the first Australian swimmer to compete at four Olympics and today is rightly regarded as one of the greatest breaststrokers ever."Body Lengths" reveals the constant pressure Leisel was under from coaches, the media and herself to be perfect. As a result Leisel suffered depression, and at one time attempted to take her own life.In London she was criticised by the media for her weight, and appalled by the bulling and dysfunction in the Australian swim team, but she always handled herself with great composure. She has emerged from life as an athlete with maturity and good humour, having finally learnt how to be herself and live with confidence.Discover this inspiring story of an Australian sporting hero which includes revelations about Leisel's life that have never been published before, including the toxic culture within the Australian swim team and what led to their demise at the London Olympics. Written in Leisel's voice, it is an entertaining and often moving portrait of a country girl who grew up in the glare of the media spotlight."Body Lengths" also deals with issues relating to body image, and is a perfect read for young women."
I found Body Lengths a very gripping read: you don't have to be a sports fan to enjoy it! With Felicity McLean's help, Leisel has written from the heart and the result is an authentic and intensely relatable story. Leisel's honesty about her struggles with depression, body image issues and discovering how to be herself in the limelight make this a very empowering read for young women". –
