The infamous and controversial Edward Snowden is set to bring his contentious story to Australia in May, starting at the MCEC in Melbourne on 22 May. The former Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) employee, and former contractor for the United States government is notorious for copying and leaking classified information about the National Security Agency (NSA) in 2013. Not afraid to speak out about the injustices of government agencies in the USA, American born Snowden revealed that the NSA was secretly acquiring the records of everyday Americans, which led to a nationwide scandal and resulted in momentous US surveillance policy reform.
"Snowden is renowned for fighting back against the injustice of unauthorised government surveillance by exposing the invasive actions of the National Security Agency (NSA) and other intelligence agencies during his time as a high-level technology and cyber security specialist across US government agencies".
Faced with "espionage" charges in the USA, Snowden maintains, "Truth has its costs, but I would rather be without a State than without a voice."
Appearing live via video link in Melbourne and Sydney, Snowden will divulge how he leaked the information but most importantly, why he felt it was necessary to do it.
