In search of a hearty breakfast in Caloundra one Sunday morning, my family and I hit the streets. Many of the cafes close to Bulcock Street were busy due to the Sunday markets, but a little off the beaten track, towards the upper end of Bulcock Street, we were enticed by the smell of bacon to turn down Knox Avenue, where we discovered an Italian Restaurant and Pizzeria called Amici's. Now this is not a normal venue for breakfast, and having coeliacs in our party we approached with a little trepidation as Italian and coeliacs don't generally mix. Upon enquiry, the staff were immediately knowledgeable and helpful, assuring us they had gluten free bread, bacon and ham. Hallelujah! We promptly found seats, and though those with a view of the sea were already taken, from my seat I could see the Glasshouse a mountains in the distance.

We perused the menu, and were tempted by the Big Breakfast with all of the usual treats, four different styles of pancakes and the Breakfast Bruschetta, but in the end my husband and I both chose eggs Benedict served with bacon. The prices were standard cafe breakfast prices, and there was a special kids breakfast menu for our children to choose from. You can see the full breakfast menu on their Website .

Our coffees came, along with the kids milkshakes and coloring activities to keep them entertained while we sat enjoying the fresh ocean air as we waited for our meals. It was quite fresh on the verandah, but there was ample seating in doors if we really were too cold. When our breakfasts arrived they looked fantastic. Our first excitement was the gluten free bread. Bought from the Beach Bakery just down the road, it looke like a slice from a real crusty bread loaf! My husband tucked in and pronounced it one of the best gluten free breads he'd tasted.

When it comes to Eggs Benedict, I'm fussy. The Hollandaise sauce has to be just right - freshly made and none of that fake stuff that you find in a bottle in the supermarket. Let me tell you that this was one of the best sauces I had had in a long time! We all enjoyed our meals immensely and the staff were friendly and helpful. Happy with our meals, I paid, and picked up a menu for their regular service of dinner and takeaway (breakfast is only served on Sunday). I was happy to see gluten free pasta on the menu. We might have to visit and try their Dine-in Menu one day this week. (They are open from Tuesday until Sunday from 5.00pm for dinner.) Amici also have a delivery service, and you can order online from the Amici Website or phone your order through by calling 54919511.
