Stories of love, longing and loss in stunning performance
On Sunday 19 November, I was lucky to see the Melbourne premiere of American Song Cycle: A Double Bill at Chapel Off Chapel, in Prahran.

American Song Cycle-Chapel Off Chapel

Directed by Chris Parker and Geoffrey Castles (Musical Director), the show is divided into two acts: December Songs, written by Maury Yeston (Titanic, Nine) and Songs From An Unmade Bed written by Mark Campbell, and 18 composers.

December Songs is beautifully performed by local musical talent Lisa-Marie Parker (Soloist), Geoffrey Castles (Piano) and Timothy Hennessy (Cello). The songs tells intimate stories of love, loss and discovery through winter in New York. This deeply moving performance and worthy of a main stage production or tour.

Songs From An Unmade Bed tells the stories of a gay man in New York, recounting his life, loves and loss from his bed. There are 18 songs in this act, written by 18 individual composers, with the libretto by Mark Campbell. John O'Hara plays the 'man' (soloist) with Geoffrey Castles (Piano/Piano Accordion), Timothy Hennessy (Cello) and Lara Wilson (Percussion) in a performance which takes you back to the magic of New York and the Broadway scene.

Listen to an interview with the cast here.

You can see the Michael Winther's version of 'The Other Other Woman' from Songs From An Unmade Bed here.

The songs and stories in both acts are both touching and emotive, and hopefully American Song Cycle: A Double Bill and this amazing cast will perform a return season soon.
