The dreamiest cinema experience under the stars
American Express Openair Cinemas in Glenelg (photo by Fatema Sitabkhan)

If you're trying to find ways to make the most of the last days of warm sunshine, whilst lounging by the beach and being kissed by the fresh sea breeze from the ocean, then the American Express Openair Cinemas in Glenelg might be the answer! Offering entertainment that can be suitable to people of all ages under a starry night, the Openair Cinema experience will leave you relaxed, spoiled, and loved.

Picking the perfect autumn day with just the right amount of sunshine, my boyfriend and I cruised into the Cinema venue, which is situated in the prime spot adjacent to the ocean. The venue is spacious, well-laid out, and is equipped with options of food (by Salts Meats and Cheese) and wine (by Giesen Wines). There is also a DJ station, which plays some of the best music (ranging from the classics of the 90s to the current era) to pump up the visitors of the Cinema for a fantastic night down the Bay! The glistening sunshine blanketed the space with its warmth, which further added to the beauty of this experience.

The Openair Cinema experience is a delightful one for us, as it reignites our love for the ultimate cinema experience that comes closest to achieving the appeal of a drive-in movie. We picked a night when Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle was playing and while we weren't fussed if the movie was good (it was brilliant!), it certainly added to the enjoyment of the night. When we booked our tickets to this experience two years ago, we learned that watching a movie was just part of the experience. And just like that night, all the added elements, such as stargazing, listening to the ocean waves, and basking in the general, social atmosphere of the Bay are what made this experience a truly memorable one this time around as well.

Opening their doors from 6pm onwards, customers are given ample time to find the best spot in the house, from where they can enjoy a magical night with their loved ones. The tickets we received provided us with some added perks, such as 2x bean bags, 2x blankets, 2x cushions, 2x glasses of wine, 2x boxes of popcorn (by Red Rock Deli Popcorn) with refills (leading up to the movie), and 2x mini tubs of Ben & Jerry's ice cream (flavour of your choice).

If you're looking for something more substantial, there is also a generous selection of delicious wood-fired oven pizzas (both savoury and sweet). We opted for the Meat Lovers and San Daniele pizzas - both of which proved to be incredibly fresh, delicious, and super filling! Couple it with a glass of wine / beer / cocktail / soft drink and you have a winning combination fit for an early dinner (and the perfect romantic date, in our case)!

For those who don't want to leave their furry friends at home, why not bring them along to the Openair Cinema? The venue is dog-friendly and it made our night to see some of the pooches out and about, just as their humans were having a great night too. Just make sure that they are well-behaved and on a leash and you'll be crystal!

Having never tried the Star Lounge experience before, we found it to be well worth the money! For an awesome and unique cinema experience that keeps us well-fed, well-hydrated, well comfortable, and ticks all the boxes of entertainment under a (luckily) star-studded sky, the splurge has some great perks to it. It's even more worth it if you have an Amex card, which gives you a 15% discount on some tickets, along with complimentary blanket hire - perfect for the autumn nights that have started to require an added level of warmth and snuggles! If you prefer to bring your own picnic rug / cushions / blankets, then you are more than welcome to do so as well - it's pretty transparent that the idea of committing to this experience is to have fun and the FOH team undoubtedly ensure that this is the case for all the customers at the Cinema.

By the end of the night, my boyfriend and I were well-snuggled into the bean bag loungers and we may have found it to be a bit effortful to get up and leave the cozy nook that we nestled ourselves into, whilst enjoying a thoroughly fun and lighthearted comedy/action movie - all pointing to what shaped up to be the perfect night under the stars!

With less than two weeks to go before the Openair Cinemas wrap up for another season, I would highly suggest this option for a date with your special someone, as a family outing, a catch up with friends, or simply to treat yo'self to something truly unique and fun! Find the list of movies showing till the end of the season here and book your tickets ASAP. Award-winning movies such as Black Panther and The Shape of the Water

Special thanks to Weekend Notes and American Express Openair Cinemas for the VIP tickets to this beautiful event.
