Inner West is host to the December season of the American Express Open Air Cinema. Located at the very convenient and cosy Cadigal Green within University of Sydney, this venue has parking around it and is easy to get to by bus from the city.
The season began on Nov 29th and has some of the best flicks running till December 20 including the latest movies like Murder on the Orient Express, Thor Ragnarok, Blade Runner 2049 and favourites like Love Actually, almost Oscar-winning La La Land and Dirty Dancing.
The gates open at 6 pm each night and moviegoers can get in early and enjoy some time at the bar sampling Giesen Wines or perhaps some live music on certain nights. I rocked up at 6 pm and there was a smooth process to enter and ample time to find a nice spot and get settled.
Salt Meats and Cheese has whipped up a menu for all, serving some of their best selling pizzas and pastas. I indulged in the truffle pecorino pasta which was listed as their bestseller. If desserts are your thing, try their new dessert, cheese on a stick, which comes in about 4 different options. It's stick-licking good.

The venue is also dog-friendly so you can get your 4 legged friend along to enjoy an evening at the outdoors. On the night, I saw many fur friends, big and small, nicely tucked in to enjoy a night at the movies. Most moviegoers brought in a picnic basket and blanket, however, for anyone who wants to upgrade their movie experience, there are loungers, blankets and premium lounge experiences available. The website has all the upgrade options however they are limited, so you'll have to get in there quick and book your upgrade. American Express cardholders can realise their cards' potential by getting 15% off the ticket prices and a free blanket hire as well. I highly recommend getting the blanket as it gets a little more cosy with the blanket around oneself.
The movie is played around the 8:15 - 8:30 pm mark, generally after the sun goes down. So it's great to get in early, have a bite or drink and settle down on the loungers or picnic blankets for a fun movie experience.
American Express Open Air Cinemas are unfortunately at the mercy of the weather. If bad weather conditions prevail, the event organizing team will accommodate patrons with alternative movie options on other nights. Fingers crossed the weather holds up this season else we'll have to wait for the upcoming January season at Bondi to enjoy a movie night under the stars.
