Touted as the freshest films from the US Festival Circuit, the 2017
American Essentials Film Festival is full of new works that are Australian premieres drawn from the 2016 Toronto and Venice festivals and the 2017 Sundance, Berlin, Rotterdam and SXSW events. Impressively, most of the films are here in Oz within a matter of weeks after their world premieres.
Ranging from thrillers, melodrama, adventure, comedy, coming of age, body horror, political documentary, symphonic documentary, classics, music, cult, art, and biography, there's something for everyone. If you don't have a hardcopy, you can download the programme in PDF format
HERE .
Replete with an Opening Night Gala and mysteries exposed by our very own Australian Bond, you can look forward to some old favourites like The Graduate, Mulholland Drive and the late Carrie Fisher's own Postcards from the Edge.
Attend the
Opening Night 's highly anticipated premiere of Mike Mills's
20th Century Women and enjoy a pre-film celebration with Stella Artois, wine, canapes and live entertainment. Starring the wonderful Annette Bening, and supported by a stellar cast in Elle Fanning, Greta Gerwig, and Billy Crudup, Annette plays a crumbling heroine in this feminist epic as she does her best to bring up a teenage son.
In the Centrepiece,
Becoming Bond , find out why Australian actor George Lazenby only ever made one Bond film. A classic 'truth is stranger than fiction' story, the answer is likely to surprise you. Lazenby himself will confront the camera and take you on his journey, with a lot of humour, from being a car mechanic to 007 and life after.
The 90-minute documentary
David Lynch: The Art Life is for the lover of art, Lynch and anything in between. One of cinema's great directors and visionaries, this doco looks at a side of Lynch that's less known; his visual art practice. For one screening only in each location, journey through the 60s and 70s American art scene.
With a plethora of
