Alzheimer's WA will be holding their first ever Quiz Night and this will coincide with Dementia Awareness Month.



Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia, affecting about 70% of all people suffering from dementia and it is a disease which now affects many age groups. The biggest risk factor for having Alzheimer's disease is increasing age, with three in ten people over 85 having dementia.

Alzheimer's is a progressive disease that destroys memory and other important mental functions making it impossible to do ordinary everyday things that the sufferer is used to doing.



There are a few treatments that can help, but this condition cannot be cured. It can last for many years or can, in fact, be almost a lifelong disease. "Brain cell connections and the cells themselves degenerate and die, eventually destroying memory and other important mental functions".

However, the first signs of this disease is usually memory loss and confusion and these are the main symptoms. There are approximately 34,000 people in Western Australia who live with dementia. Australia wide 342,800 people were estimated to have dementia in 2015.

The Australian Alzheimer's Association predicts that "based on projections of population ageing and growth, the number of people with dementia will reach almost 400,000 by 2020, and around 900,000 by 2050".



These frightening figures mean that we need to continue research, and to this end, money is constantly needed. You can find out more about this crippling disease here .

[b]QUIZ NIGHT**
Alzheimer's WA's first quiz night promises to be heaps of fun and they are holding this event in order to raise money to support all the people here in WA living with the disease. There will be a bar, raffles, and fantastic auction items including signed sporting memorabilia, vouchers, wine tours and much more!

Bring your own food, as is the "norm" at a Quiz Night, so make sure you have some snacks at your table.
