Come and take part in Alzeimer's Australia WA's annual memory walk and jog . Beginning in 2009, the memory walk and jog started as a local community event. Now it is Alzeimer's Australia WA's biggest fundraiser for the year. There are more than 342, 800 Australians living with dementia and 32, 000 in WA alone. This year their fundraising goal is $100,000. Come and support the race against dementia!

Celebrate the lives of those who have been affected by dementia and help make sure no one with dementia walks it alone. In this fun community event, you can walk, jog or run. You can even dress-up if you want, as long as you have fun while supporting a good cause. All ages and fitness levels are welcomed. As dogs have proven to be a trip hazard, unfortunately they are not allowed at the event. All participants get a free T-shirt, a gift and access to the kids/family fun activities.

The walk course options are 2km and 4km. The 9km course is for those who want to jog or run. Everyone will be on the same course but will differ on how many laps will be taken. The event is not timed, self-timing is suggested if you want to keep a record.

The walk is on Sunday the 15th of November. Registrations start at 7:30am, with the event opening ceremony at 8:30am. The 9km run begins at 8:40am. The 4km walk begins at 8:45am and the 2km walk commences at 8:50am. At 10:15am there will be a post presentation. Online registrations are now open.

Dementia is not a disease but symptoms of a disease. It is the 2nd biggest cause of death in Australia. One of the most common causes of dementia is Alzeimer's disease . Neither are normal parts of aging. The brain gradually shrinks due to damage, this adversely affects most noticeably memory, social interactions and emotional stability.

There is no cure for dementia. In addition to Alzeimer's disease, symptoms can be caused by Parkinson's disease, Dementia with Lewy bodies, Huntington's disease, Fronto Temporal Lobar Degeneration (FTLD), Vascular dementia, Korsakoff's syndrome (alcohol related dementia) and Creutzfeldt-Jacob disease. Dementia usually has an onset age of 65 years of age, however there can be an earlier onset due to younger sufferers having rare genetic mutations. With the large number of Australians affected by dementia, you'll likely be touched by the effects of dementia yourself, someone you love or know.

Alzeimer's Australia WA is Australia's oldest and only organisation dedicated to providing support services to patients with dementia and their families, whilst participating in research. It was born out of a group of practitioners and carers of people with dementia. Alzeimer's Australia WA advocates for dementia related issues and also provides world class training services. Dementia is a human experience and not just a biological condition. Their vision is to prevent dementia while valuing and supporting those who suffer it. Donate or fundraise to help Alzeimer's Australia WA continue with their important work.
