Every Tuesday Pier Street Altona comes to life when it hosts the regular weekly market. The market, which has been a feature of Altona life for over 7 years, offers a diverse range of goods and services.
By far the most popular stall at the market is Michelle's Fresh Egg stall, with eggs sourced locally and so fresh they almost cluck. Other regular stall holders sell fresh nuts and dried fruit, honey, children's clothes, second hand CD's, hats and handbags.
Another regular stall holder sells socks, especially suited to people suffering from diabetes. You also can buy sheepskin moccasins at the market, which are always popular in the Winter months. And if you're looking for something completely different, one of the more unusual stalls is one where you can have your cards read.
Once you have exhausted all your shopping options, you can go around the corner to Don Cannoli at 92 Railway Street for a coffee and a freshly filled cannoli. The fresh and crunchy cannoli shells are filled with the creamy custard of your choice while you wait, then lightly sprinkled with icing sugar. My favourite filling is lemon cheesecake, but there are also the much loved traditional cannoli flavours which will leave you wanting more.
