Skip the Brisbane Ekka for Smaller Community Carnivals
The iconic Brisbane Ekka opens this week, after a two-year hiatus. Although many local residents eagerly await this event, others prefer to attend similar festivities with smaller crowds, shorter queues and reduced costs.

Detailed below are some recommendations for family-friendly alternative events:

1.Redbank Fun Fair

5-7 & 10-14 August, 235 Smiths Road, Redbank Plains

This family-friendly event will offer a great selection of amusement rides, games, show bags, food/drink trucks and entertainment. There will also be firework displays each Friday and Saturday evening (times to be advised)

Entry is $2 per person, from 4pm daily. Ride coupons can be purchased online.

2. Waller Park Family Fun Fair

5-20 August, Waller Park (Waller Road, Browns Plains)

Waller Park Family Fun Fair will return with some exciting new additions! These include bigger rides and a themed dinosaur park display.

Enjoy carnival rides, games, showbags and food/drink vans. Families will be enthralled by circus performances (nightly until 14 August), pig racing and fireworks (13 and 20 August).

Free entry from 6pm weekdays and 2pm weekends. Ride tickets can be purchased online.

3. Caboolture Family Fun Day

8 August, 10am-4pm, Centenary Lakes (7 Riverview Street, Caboolture)

Visitors to the Caboolture Family Fun Day will enjoy free entry, rides and entertainment! There will also be show bags for sale, market stalls, food/drink vans and various children's activities and workshops.

4. Technicolour Multicultural Festival

27 August, 10:30am-3pm, DiverCityi Centre (23 Foster Street, Newmarket)

Celebrate the 10th year anniversary of the Technicolour Multicultural Festival with live cultural performances and street food vans. Children's activities will be provided, including an animal farm, ferris wheel, dodgem cars and inflatables.

Free entry, registration required.

5. Family Day on the Lawn
6 August, 12-4pm, Fielders Club (35 Bognor Street, Tingalpa)

Sit back and relax at the Family Day on the Lawn. This event will feature live music, jumping castle, animal farm, face painting and food/drink specials.

6. The Big Birthday Party
6 August, 12-3pm, 68 Mirambeena Drive, Pimpama

Help Lutheran Ormeau Rivers District School (LORDS) celebrate their 10th birthday! Enjoy food trucks, pony rides, face painting, party games, market stalls, roving musicians and market stalls. Plus,see Bluey and Bingo (12pm, 1pm and 2pm sessions).

7. Gold Coast Kite Festival
7 August, 10am-3pm, Broadwater Parklands

Celebrate the 75th Independance Day of India and help to raise money for the Gold Coast Hospital Foundation.

Enjoy kite flying demonstrations, dance performances, live music, DJ, face painting and food stalls. Kites will also be available to purchase at the event.

Entry is $2 per person, tickets can be purchased online.

8. Ekka Family Fun Day
10 August, 10am-2pm, Calamvale Central Shopping Centre

Enjoy carnival foods, rides, balloon twisting and live music. Two ticket options available, both can be pre-booked online.

9. Three Levels of Fun

13 August, 10am-2pm, Redbank Plaza

Treat the family to free fairy floss (Level 1), balloon twisting and sno-cones (Level 2) and face painting (Level 3).

Plus, watch a free Magic and Circus Show (10am or 12pm sessions).
